Ocular Dryness Treatments

Causes and Treatments of Dry Eyes

The ocular dryness can be caused by an insufficient tear production (caused by age, following hormonal changes, linked to certain medications or autoimmune diseases) or by an excessive tear evaporation (consequent to an eyelid problem, incomplete blinking, screen exposure).

Ocular Dryness Treatments

Identifying the Causes Linked to the Dryness for a more Effective Treatment

The treatments consist of modifying the environment or habits (screens, ventilation, heater, smoke), of applying one or many ocular lubricants or to use prescription medications or drops. The patients should consult an optometrist to identify the causes of their ocular dryness and use the right treatments required depending on the severity of their condition. Furthermore, ocular lubricants are not all equivalent and should be recommended by the optometrist.

As the ocular dryness can worsen with time, even under treatment, a frequent follow up of the condition is required. This will allow the patient to benefit from the best treatment options possible, which are more and more numerous and efficient.

Sécheresse Oculaire Traitement et Causes

  • Tingling
  • Tearing
  • Red eyes
  • Light sensibility
  • Blurred vision

Also Available, the Pulsed Light Treatment

A treatment done in clinic can also be available when the tear evaporation is caused by an eyelid problem. It consists of applying an intense pulsed light (IPL, also frequently used in dermatology) with a mask which will stimulate the eyelid gland’s production (LLLT: Low Level Light Therapy technology). These treatments can help relieve the dry eyes which are caused by a chronical eyelid inflammation (blepharitis) or by a history of styes or chalazions, of ocular rosacea, of Demodex…
